During the process of studying and preparing for the IELTS exam, many people shared with Hung Nguyen Education that they have studied IELTS for a very long time but their band score is still stagnant. Check to see if you make the following mistakes when studying for the IELTS test!
1. The actual study time is not enough to get a band
According to assessment standards from Cambridge experts, the number of hours needed to get 1 band score corresponding to starting from scratch is about 300 hours of studying properly, methodically and guided by experienced people.
This means if every day:
– you study for 1 hour, you need 300 days (~ 10 months)
– you study for 2 hours, you need 150 days (~5 months)
– you study for 4 hours, you need 75 days (~2.5 months)
– you study for 8 hours, you need 38 days (~1.3 months)
So according to the above assessment framework, ask yourself whether you have studied enough hours to be able to get to the IELTS band or not. How much time do you spend a day studying IELTS? Is that study time of good enough quality?
2. Haven’t applied learned knowledge into practice
Knowledge is just on the page if you don’t immediately apply it into practice. Traditional learning methods will teach you grammar points and long vocabulary lists without guiding you on how to apply that knowledge to the IELTS test. The important thing when learning a piece of knowledge is that you can understand and use it immediately, so you can remember it for a long time. So ask yourself, how am I learning IELTS knowledge? Have you applied your knowledge to the IELTS test?
3. Haven’t tracked progress over time
The most important thing in the learning process is to always know where you are, what weaknesses you are facing, and where you are stuck. Usually we can keep track through doing tests. However, the difficulty of doing the test is that it requires professionals to be able to assess where you are having problems and make adjustments.
